Reviewed 7 October 2026 · From Saudi-side approval to residence documentation

After Saudi family visa approval, first establish exactly what has been approved. A sponsorship approval or visa authorisation, an issued entry visa and a completed Iqama are separate milestones. Your next action depends on which one you have reached.

This guide focuses on families completing a residence route from abroad. If you are still preparing the sponsor’s application, start with our Saudi family residence visa guide. If a family member is already visiting the Kingdom, use the separate visit-to-Iqama guidance for that status.

1. Identify your approval and read its instructions

Check the official record rather than relying on a message saying “approved.” Save the approval or authorisation details, identify the family members included and read any instructions for the next stage. Check names and passport details before arranging overseas processing.

The official residence visa service includes completing procedures at a Saudi embassy or consulate before travel. Saudi-side approval should therefore not be treated as proof that every overseas requirement is finished. Official residence visa service.

  • You have an application or appointment confirmation: establish whether an approval has actually been issued.
  • You have a sponsorship approval or authorisation: confirm the embassy or consular process required for the family.
  • You have an issued residence entry visa: check its identity details, conditions and travel dates.
  • Your family has entered Saudi Arabia: follow the applicable dependent-registration and residence-issuance steps.

This is a way to describe your stage accurately. It does not replace the wording or conditions of the official record.

2. Confirm the checklist for the application country

Use the official Saudi embassy directory to find the mission responsible for the country where the family will apply. Confirm which visa service and authorised submission channel it currently uses.

Ask the mission or its designated provider about the items relevant to your case:

  • How the Saudi-side approval or authorisation must be presented.
  • Passport validity, forms, photographs and submission arrangements.
  • Relationship records and any required authentication or translation.
  • Whether medical examinations apply, to whom and through which approved provider.
  • Whether any other certificates, attendance or biometric steps are required.
  • Charges, passport return and how to respond to requests for additional information.

These are questions to verify, not a universal list of mandatory documents. Requirements and arrangements may differ by application location and case. Do not assume that a medical or police-certificate instruction from another country’s checklist applies to every spouse or child.

For document organisation, see our Saudi family visa documents guide. Recheck the next stage’s instructions even if documents were previously accepted inside Saudi Arabia.

3. Complete overseas processing and keep the record

Prepare the requested file, attend any required appointments and keep submission receipts. Track which passport or application reference belongs to each family member. If an additional document is requested, record the exact instruction and the action taken.

Arrange a required medical examination only after confirming the accepted provider, form and timing. A result obtained for another process should not be assumed acceptable. Do not use a blanket three-month medical validity period unless the instruction for your case states it.

If a passport changes during processing, notify the relevant channel and establish what needs updating before travel. Do not edit an issued document yourself or assume that carrying the old and new passports resolves every mismatch.

4. Check the issued visa before booking travel

Compare the issued visa with the passport for each traveller. Check the name, passport number, visa category and the dates or conditions relevant to entry. The official service instructs travellers to complete the consular process and travel within the visa’s permitted period; use the dates on your own visa rather than a generic entry window.

Before making a non-refundable booking:

  • Confirm that the required visa has been issued for every person travelling.
  • Resolve identity or passport-number discrepancies through the issuing channel.
  • Check the latest entry and document instructions for the issued visa.
  • Confirm any transit requirements for the proposed itinerary with the relevant authorities and carrier.
  • Keep accessible copies of the visa, approval and documents the mission tells you to carry.

A suggested processing estimate is not an issued visa. If only part of the family’s paperwork is complete, plan around each traveller’s actual status.

5. After entry, check dependent registration and Iqama requirements

Keep the family’s entry records and check the border-number information used for residence services. Then review the current family-member services in Absher and the instructions applicable to the sponsor’s case.

Absher’s January 2022 guide describes Resident ID issuance, including conditions concerning presence inside the Kingdom, a valid passport, an approved medical examination and recorded identity details. For your family’s current application, confirm which registration, medical, biometric and insurance steps the live service requires. Absher service guide (English PDF, January 2022). Use the current service instructions for your application; the linked PDF is background guidance.

Ask which registration or issuance step remains for each family member and complete it within the applicable deadline. Do not assume that a payment receipt, arrival record or pending request means an Iqama has already been issued.

If the family member does not appear, a record is incorrect or a required step is not recognised, keep the exact message and ask the official support channel which action is needed. Avoid creating repeated requests or paying again before checking the existing transaction.

6. Coordinate insurance with your employer

The Insurance Authority states that private-sector employers must provide insurance for covered employees and eligible family members, with the employer responsible for the applicable premiums. Insurance Authority FAQs.

Ask HR which family members are covered and what it needs to activate their records. Verify the identity details and the status of the required coverage before assuming the insurance step is complete. Do not automatically buy a duplicate policy because a general relocation checklist lists insurance as a personal expense.

7. Verify the completed residence record

When issuance is confirmed, review each family member’s Resident ID details and validity. Save the official confirmation and record any renewal or follow-up dates. Keep the residence result distinct from earlier visa and payment records.

If a correction is needed, use the designated official process. For future travel, check the requirements that apply to the family’s current residence status at that time rather than assuming the original entry visa covers later journeys.

Frequently asked questions

Can my family travel as soon as the sponsorship request is approved?

First check whether the entry visa has been issued and whether the applicable overseas procedures are complete. Use the issued visa’s conditions and dates when planning travel.

Does every child need the same medical examination?

Confirm the age- and case-specific instructions from the Saudi mission or residence service. Do not apply one adult checklist to every child.

How long does the process take after approval?

Establish which stage is outstanding: overseas document review, a required examination, visa issuance or the post-arrival residence step. Ask the responsible provider about that stage. There is no single verified completion time for every family and application country.

Is entry into Saudi Arabia the same as receiving an Iqama?

No. Check the separate residence-issuance result. Follow the applicable post-entry instructions and deadlines for each family member.

Ask Sanad about the stage you have reached

Our family residence assistance in English covers preparation, submission assistance and follow-up within the agreed scope. Tell us whether you have Saudi-side approval, an issued visa, or an issue after entry, and where the family is currently located.

Start with a summary and ask what assistance is available, what you need to do yourself and what the service fee includes. You do not need to share passport numbers, document scans, account passwords or verification codes in the first message. Official decisions remain with the authorities.
